(Jaggard) - " ... it was acknowledged to be superior to any of its predecessors, and the preface commanded universal admiration." (Lowndes) - Tlw. leicht stockfl. (das Porträt stärker) und gebräunt, 1 Ecke bestoßen, 1 Deckel mit Nagelspur. Insgesamt schönes und sehr dekoratives Exemplar.
First edition of Johnson's Shakespeare. With 1 engr. portrait frontispiece. Later light brown calf bindings with rich gilt spine and double label in colours. - Slightly foxed in places (the portrait stronger) and browned, 1 corner bumped, 1 cover with trace of scraping. All in all fine and very decorative copy.
