Die erste Ausgabe ohne Holzschnitte erschien 1475 in Ferrara. - "For his published edition of Hyginus, Ratdolt obviously derived both the pictures and the text from manuscript sources. Which manuscript Ratdolt used is not known and is probably immaterial ... What is important, however, is that in many instances these medieval European, often mythological, constellation figures differed notably from those used by Ptolemy and his Islamic successors ... Several stylistic conventions, first published in Ratdolt's woodcuts, did endure for several centuries, both in the numerous editions of Hyginus and in the various maps derived therefrom ... Bibliographers have identified more sixteenth-century editions of Hyginus than can conveniently be included in this catalog. Suffice it to say that most, if not all, of the constellation figures in these books were closely patterned after the figures printed by Ratdolt. Ratdolt's figures led directly to those of Jacob de Gheyn and through him to those of Johannes Bayer." "Als Reißer der 47 Holzschnitte ist auf Grund der Schlußverse der aus Heilbronn stammende Mitherausgeber Johannes Santritter in Erwägung zu ziehen" (Bibl. Schäfer). - Mit einigen Marginalien von insges. vier Händen des 15.-18. Jhs. Das Kolorit ebenfalls aus diesem Zeitraum von zwei oder drei Händen, darunter der zeitgenöss. Rubrikator, der etwa die Hälfte der Holzschnitte mit kl. roten Einmalungen versehen hat. Blatt g5 verso (mit Holzschn. Luna) mit vollständig kolor. Hintergrund in Gelb. - Ohne das erste w. Bl. (a1). - Letzte 10 Bll. etw. braunfleckig, sonst nur stellenw. leicht finger- oder im Rand gering stockfleckig; Marginalien tls. beschnitten. Insges. gutes Exemplar.
First illustrated edition, containing the earliest known representations of the constellations in a book. 47 allegorical woodcuts of the principal constellations, planets and signs of the zodiac, 15 of which are coloured by two or three hands from 15th to 18th century and 24 partly coloured in red by the rubricator. Further with numerous white-on-black woodcut initials (partly coloured). Mod. vellum. - Lacking the first blank. Last 10 leaves somewhat brownstained, minor fingerstaining or foxing in places; some marginalia by 4 hands from 15th to 18th century (partly trimmed). Fine copy.
