Vollständiges Exemplar einer kleinen Auflage in Handeinbänden des Verlegers.
"The zenith of the iconographical description of the birds of the British Isles" (Anker). - Eines von 550 Exemplaren. Die sehr schönen, naturgetreuen Tafeln nach Zeichnungen von A. Thorburn, J. G. Keulemans, G. E. Lodge und W. Foster zeigen meist mehrere Vögel vor landschaftlichem Hintergrund. "Die eigentliche Entdeckung Lord Lilford‘s war jedoch Archibald Thorburn, Sohn des Miniaturmalers Robert Thorburn. Durch diese Figuren für Lilford‘s Werk … begründete er rasch einen Ruhm, der sich seitdem weit über Ornithologen- und Jägerkreise hinaus erweitert hat" (Nissen).
EINBAND: Rote originale Halbmaroquinbände mit breiten Lederecken, erhabenen Bünden und goldgeprägtem Rückentitel sowie Kopfgoldschnitt (sign. R. H. Porter). 26,5 : 18 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 1 Porträtfotografie und 421 chromolithographischen Tafeln. - ZUSTAND: Blattränder stellenw. leicht stockfleckig. Kanten und Ecken vereinz. bestoßen, insgesamt schönes und guterhaltenes Exemplar auf kräftigem Papier und im originalen Handeinband des Verlegers, so sehr selten. - PROVENIENZ: Mit gest. Exlibris "GSB". - Zuletzt norddeutsche Privatsammlung.

Keulemans and others. Orig. handbound half morocco bindings (signed by the publisher) with raised bands, gilt title on spine and top edge gilt. - Paper edges foxed in places. Edges and corners of bindings here and there bumped. In general fine copy on strong paper in hand bindings by the publisher. - Engr. bookplate with monogram "GSB". - Northern German private collection.
