Sehr seltene Pariser Postinkunabel in einem prächtigen Wappeneinband. Einzige französische Ausgabe der im Mittelalter meistbenutzten lateinischen Chronik.

Besonders die Geschichte der Päpstin Johanna - hier zum ersten Mal erwähnt - fand in diesem Werk die weiteste Verbreitung. Ausnehmend schöner Bastarda-Druck mit figürlichen und grotesken Holzschnitt-Initialen.

EINBAND: Roter Maroquin-Einband mit goldgeprägtem Wappensupralibros ("Bibliothèque de Mello"), goldgeprägtem Rückentitel und Ganzgoldschnitt, Innendeckel aus blauem Maroquin mit breiter, goldgeprägter Spitzenmuster-Bordüre (signiert "Duru 1859"). Folio. 33,5 : 22,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 2 großen Holzschnitt-Initialen auf den Titeln, 1 Stammbaumschema und zahlr. tlw. grotesken Holzschnitt-Initialen. - KOLLATION: 6 nn., 182 num. Bll. (1 w.); 8 nn., 151 num. Bll. (fehlerhaft pag. 251-402). 2 Spalten. - ZUSTAND: Stammbaum seitlich beschnitten, zweiter Titel mit Stempel eines Benediktinerkonvents. Einbd. stellenw. mit leichten Schabspuren. Insgesamt prächtiges Exemplar. - PROVENIENZ: Von dem französischen Buchbinder Hippolite Duru sorgfältig restauriertes und durchgehend regliertes Exemplar in einem prachtvollen Wappeneinband aus der Sammlung des Barons Achille Seillière. Das Wappen abgebildet bei Olivier/Hermal 1189; vgl. ferner ebd. 1130 zu dessen Biographie.

First and only French edition of the chronicle, widespread in the Middle-Ages and the main source for the knowledge of the theologians during centuries. Of special importance for the legend of Pope Joan. 2 parts in 1 vol. With calligraphic grotesque woodcut initial on the title of each part, 1 woodcut genealogical tree, numerous small decorative woodcut initials, those of the second part in a similar calligraphic grotesque style, printers device on last leave. French bastard type, 2 columns. 19th cent. red morocco by Duru, gilt coat-of-arms "Bibliothèque de Mello" (Olivier/Hermal 1189), gilt edges and blue morocco pastedowns with gilt press à la dentelle. - A fine and carefully restored copy by H. Duru. The genealogical tree cropped close, second title with old stamp of a Benedictine convent. Binding slightly rubbed. Splendid copy from the collection of Baron Achille Seillière (1813-73).
