Erste Ausgabe . - Nahezu vollständiges und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar dieses prachtvollen Tafelwerks. Die ersten beiden Bände, deren 200 Tafeln sämtlich nach Zeichnungen aus dem Besitz des Herzogs von Devonshire ausgeführt wurden, erschienen 1777, der dritte Band mit Tafeln nach Vorlagen aus anderen Sammlungen erst 1819, jeweils in London. - Die Zeichnungen von Claude Lorrain (eigtl. C. Gellée; genannt Le Lorraine) wurden von Richard Earlom in einer ungewöhnlichen künstlerischen Kombination von Umrißradierung und Schabkunst bearbeitet, welche insbesondere auch die Wiedergabe von Nuancen, Schattierungen und Stimmungen ermöglichte. - "Although engraved in mezzotint technique, this captial work, a landmark in the history of reproduction of master drawings , is included in this catalogue as an important forerunner of later publications in this section .. This is the first .. edition, with the engravings in the best and final state.
