Andrea Palladio
I quattro libri dell'architettura. 4 Teile in 1 Band. Venedig, D. de Franceschi 1570 [d. i.

- "Although the etched and engraved copies of the original woodcuts are very close, the typography ist not a strict facsimile of the first edition .. There was clearly no intention on the part of Smith or his collaborators to produce fake copies of the first edition, and the fact that this was a new edition with facsimiles of the original woodcuts seems to have been widely known at the time of publication." (Brit. Arch. Libr.)

36,5 : 27,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 4 illustrierten Kupfertiteln (wdh.) und sehr zahlreichen, tlw. ganzseitigen Textkupfern. - KOLLATION: 2 Bll., 63 S.; 1 Bl., 76 S.; 2 Bll., 42 S., 2 Bll. (d. l. w.); 1 Bl., 131 S. (Titel in Zählung enthalten).

LITERATUR: British Arch. Libr. 2390. - Fowler 232. - Ornamentstich-Slg. Bln. 2593.

Counterfeit edition, with copperplate copies of the original woodcut illustrations from the first edition Venice 1570. Published presumably by G. Pasquali for Joseph Smith (1682-1770), art collector and British consul in Venice. With 4 illustrated engr. title pages and numerous engravings in the text (many of them fullpage). Flexible 18th cent. half vellum with ms. title on spine. - Corners fingerstained, otherwise only here and there stained and with occastional marginal tears or defects in the broad untrimmed margins. Edges rubbed.
