"After many experiments on color contrast Chevreul formulated for the first time the general principles and effects of simultaneous contrast, the modification in hue and tone that occurs when juxtaposed colors are seen simultaneously" (DSB)

Exemplar der Ausgabe A mit grauem und schwarzem Hintergrund der Tafeln 5-31 (nach Norman). - "In addition to the chemical aspects of dyeing Chevreul made an intensive study of the principles governing the contrast of colors, which resulted in his monumental De la loi .. the most influential of his many books. This book was the outcome of his discovery that the apparent intensity and vigor of colors depended less on the pigmentation of the material used than on the hue of the neighboring fabric." (DSB) - Der Chemiker Chevreul (1786-1889) leitete seit 1824 die Färberei der Kgl. Gobelin-Manufaktur und hatte ab 1830 eine Professur für Chemie inne. Sein vorliegendes Werk beeinflußte weniger die Optik als das zeitgenössische Kunstgewerbe und die Malerei, darunter vor allem die Impressionisten bzw Pointilisten G. Seurat und P. Signac.

Moderner Halblederband mit Rückenschild unter Verwendung der alten Deckel und Vorsätze (Text), 22 : 13,5 cm, und Halblederband der Zeit mit Rückenvergoldung (Atlas), 28,5 : 24,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 3 (2 farbig) gestochenen und 37 lithographierten Tafeln (34 mit Schablonenkolorit) auf zusammen 22 Blatt (davon 15 gefaltet und 1 mit beweglichem Teil, 14 unterhalb der Darstellung von Chevreul signiert) sowie 9 Schriftproben auf farbigem Papier und 2 gefalteten Tabellen. - KOLLATION: XV, 735 S.; 2 Bll. - ZUSTAND: Tafeln tlw. leicht stockfl. und schwach wasserrandig (dadurch vereinz. mit leichtem Abklatsch), 1 Taf. mit kl. Fehlstelle (Darstellungsverlust), 1 Taf. mit kl. Randläsuren, 1 Taf. mit Knickspur, Text stockfl. und etw. gebräunt. Kanten beschabt, Gelenke des Tafelbandes etw. brüchig.

First edition of Chevreul's influential main work on color harmony. With 3 (2 in colors) engr. and 37 lithographed plates (34 with stenciled coloring) on together 22 sheets (of which 15 folding and 1 with movable part, 14 sheets signed by Chevreul below the image) as well as 9 handwriting samples on color papers and 2 folding charts. Modern half calf with label using the old boards and endpapers (text vol.), and contemp. half calf with gilt spine (atlas). - Plates slightly foxed and with slight traces of damp (leading to slight offsetting), 1 plate with small defective spot (loss of image), 1 plate with small marginal blemish, 1 plate with crease mark, text foxed and somewhat browned. Edgeworn, joints of plate vol. somewhat brittle.
