"The earliest genuine attempt at a critical edition of the Vulgate text" (Darlow/Moule zur EA 1528). - "Quatre années avoient suffi pour l'entier écoulement de l'édition in-folio de 1528 à laquelle celle-ci est de beaucoup préférable ... La Sorbonne persécuta Robert, et pour cette édtion, et plus encore pour la courageuse persévérance avec laquelle il multiplia les réimpressions soit complètes, soit partielles des Livres Saints ..." (Renouard). - Die schöne Holzschnitt-Druckermarke zeigt Estiennes berühmtes Verlegerzeichen, den Olivenbaum mit abgesägten und aufgepropften Ästen, unterhalb Paulus mit dem Wahlspruch "Noli altum sapere". Die beiden Zwischentitel mit einer Variante dieser großen Druckermarke (vgl. Schreiber, The Estiennes S. 253 und 252). Das Wort "Biblia" auf dem Titel ist mit einer figuralen Holzschnitt-Bordüre eingefaßt und stammt - ebenso wie die Initialen - von Geoffroy Tory. - Das große eingemalte Kardinalswappen (siehe Abb.) überdeckt die Schlußpassage des Buches Hiob auf Bl. 212; dieser fehlende Text wurde von einer Hand des 16. Jhs. auf einem eingeb. Bl. sorgfältig ersetzt. - Fehlt 1 w. Bl. - Tlw. geringfüg. stockfl., vereinz. wasserrandig und leicht braunfleckig, erste und letzte Bll. der Bde. meist deutlicher fleckig, 1 Bl. mit kl. Einriß im Bundsteg. Einbde. leicht beschabt und bestoßen, Kapitale tlw. beschädigt. - Prachtvoller, breitrandiger Druck mit rotem Rahmen und gedruckten Marginalien in kleinerer Type.
Second enlarged edition (first 1528) of the famous and splendid printed Bible by Estienne. 3 parts in 1 vol. With 3 large woodcut printer's devices (the beautiful olive tree with Saint Paul), numerous metalcut initials as well as 3 painted initials in gold and colours and 3 painted coat-of-arms of a cardinal. 16th cent. leather with gilt fillets and tooled gilt edges. - End passage of Book Job on leaf 212 covered with the large painted coat-of-arms (compare the illustr.), the lacking text carefully replaced by a 16th cent. hand on 1 separate leaf. - Without 1 blank leaf. - Partly minor foxing, here and there waterstaining and few brownstaining, first and last leaves varyingly stained; 1 leaf with small tear in the gutter. Binding sligthly bumped and rubbed, extremities of spines partly damaged. Else fine and broadmargined copy, text framed in red and with printed marginal notes.
