"This volume is cited by Updike as a distinguished example of de Tournes's printing, in which he successfully solves a difficult problem of balance between the text and the heraldic woodcuts." (Mortimer) - "The result is that a book containing great variety of text, of unequal amount to a page, appears perfectly 'natural' and harmonious because unified by this reiteration of position. Practically but one font of a robust old style roman is used for the text. The heraldic bearings, which avoid monotony by being designed with great reserve and frugality of line, are brilliantly printed from very well engraved wood-blocks." (Updike I, 202f.) - Der Titel mit De Tournes' schöner Midas-Bordüre (vgl. Cartier I, 65f., mit Abb.). - Ebenso wie bei Mortimer ist im vorlieg. Expl. auf den S. 123-135 die Angabe "De France" mit einem in der Offizin gefertigten Korrekturstreifen überklebt, der den richtigen Titel "De Navarre" trägt. - Unt. Kapital sowie 1 Außengelenk restauriert. Prachtvolles Exemplar aus der Bibliothek des französischen Diplomaten und Bibliophilen Louis-Robert-Hippolyte de Bréhant, comte de Plélo (1699-1734). "Ardent bibliophile, il avait formé une collection concernant principalement le Nord de l'Europe." (Olivier/Hermal 1715, 1 und 2).
First edition of the very fine printed heraldic book (cf. Updike I, 203). With de Tournes' Midas-titleborder and 1068 heraldic woodcuts. Early 18th cent. calf with gilt spine and label, gilt heraldic stamp between the raised bands, boards with gilt fillets, inside gilt border and armorial centrepiece of L.-R.-H. de Bréhant, comte de Plélo (Olivier/Hermal 1715, 1-2). - Like the Mortimer-copy leaves I/2 to m/2 with cancel slips printed "De Navarre" pasted over the incorrect running title "De France". - Lower extremity of spine and 1 outer joint restored. Fine copy from the library of the French ambassadeur Bréhant de Plélo.
