Bis 1555 erschienen noch drei Ergänzungen zu dem vorliegenden Grundwerk. - "Gesner, the German-Swiss naturalist and polymath, attempted to describe all the existing books in Latin, Greek and Hebrew (though not those in the vernacular) in a majestic series of volumes. These are the earliest systematic 'books about books' to be published and they mark the beginning of modern critical bibliography. For Gesner was no mere enumerator of titles; he gave also his considered estimate of their comparative worth.
The present ample folio, the first of the series, is the author-bibliography, in which the writers are arranged under their names. Their books are listed with particulars of the various printed editions, as well as critical notes; even manuscripts and projected and unfinished works are mentioned ... 'The Universal Library' and its sequels qualify him also for the title of protobibliographer of the printed book." (PMM) - Exemplar mit dem 18-seit. Register am Anfang sowie dem schönen ganzseitigen Wappenholzschnitt von Leonhard Beckh a Beckenstain. Nur zu Beginn und am Ende mit Wurmspuren, Randläs. sowie wasserrandig, Titel mit ausgeb. Fehlstellen und fleckig (leichter Textverlust), der eigentliche Textkorpus überwieg. sauber und gut erhalten.
