Eines von 550 Exemplaren. Die sehr schönen, naturgetreuen Tafeln nach Zeichnungen von A. Thorburn, J. G. Keulemans, G. E. Lodge und W. Foster zeigen meist mehrere Vögel vor landschaftlichem Hintergrund. "Die eigentliche Entdeckung Lord Lilford‘s war jedoch Archibald Thorburn, Sohn des Miniaturmalers Robert Thorburn. Durch diese Figuren für Lilford‘s Werk … begründete er rasch einen Ruhm, der sich seitdem weit über Ornithologen- und Jägerkreise hinaus erweitert hat" (Nissen).

EINBAND: Originale Halbmaroquinbände mit breiten Lederecken, erhabenen Bünden und goldgeprägtem Rückentitel sowie Kopfgoldschnitt (sign. R. H. Porter). 26,5 : 18 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 1 Porträtfotografie und 421 chromolithographischen Tafeln. - ZUSTAND: Am äußersten unbeschnittenen Seitenrand tls. leicht stockfleckig, vereinz. gering gebräunt, 1 Taf. mit Randausriß, 2 Tafeln verso mit mont. Vogelabbildung. Rücken verfärbt, Kanten tls. etw. berieben, bei Bd. VI ob. Ecken bestoßen. Insgesamt schönes und guterhaltenes Exemplar auf kräftigem Papier und im originalen Handeinband des Verlegers, so sehr selten.

First edition of this iconographic milestone on bird illustration. 7 vols. Fine and complete copy with photographic portrait of the author and 421 chromolithographic plates after A. Thorburn, J. G. Keulemans and others. Orig. signed handbound half morocco with raised bands, gilt title on spine and top edge gilt. - The uncut fore-edge slightly foxed, here and there minor browning, 1 plate with marginal tear-off, 2 plates with mounted bird illustration on verso. Spines discolored, edges partly rubbed, vol. 6 upper corners bumbed. In general fine copy on strong paper, each plate and leaf hinged separately on linen guard.R)
