Sehr seltene frühe Beschreibung von Akadien durch den dortigen Gouverneur, der das Gebiet vierzig Jahre lang verwaltete und bereiste. "Hence his book is among the best and most authentic materials we have relating those Provinces" (Church).

Erste Ausgabe des seltenen Werkes, dessen beide Bände mit separaten Titeln erschienen sind. Band I mit dem Verlegervermerk Billaine, Band II mit Barbin. - Nicolas Denys (1598-1688) wurde 1632 zum Gouverneur der französischen Besitzungen im nordöstlichen Kanada und Akadien ernannt. Sein Vewaltungsgebiet reichte von Cape Conso am östlichsten Ende von Nova Scotia bis Cape Rosier an der Mündung der Penobscot Bay (Maine). "The author gives an account of the long and unsuccessful attempt to colonize the territory .. The second volume is devoted largely to the codfishery, the natural history of the country, and the manners and life of the Indians."
