Insgesamt die dritte Ausgabe der Principia , ein seitengleicher Nachdruck der zweiten Ausgabe Cambridge 1713. "This edition contains considerable additions by the author, while the chapters on the lunar theory and the theory of comets were much enlarged. It was edited by Roger Cotes, whose preface, in which he vigorously attacks the Cartesian philosophy then still in vogue at the universities, and refutes an assertion that Newton's theory of attraction is a causa occulta, is of great historical importance" (Sotheran 3257 zur Ausg. 1713).

EINBAND: Zeitgenössischer Kalblederband mit blindgeprägter floraler Deckelbordüre und blindgeprägter Deckelvignette mit dem Jesus-Monogramm "IHS" sowie gepunztem Goldschnitt. 24 : 19 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit gestochener Titelvignette, 1 doppelblattgroßen Kupfertafel und zahlreichen schematischen Textholzschnitten. - KOLLATION: 14 Bll., 484 S., 4 Bll. - ZUSTAND: Schwach gebräunt und vereinz. am Fuß wasserrandig, Titel etw. (stock-)fleckig, vord. flieg. Vorsatz entfernt. Rücken und Ecken restauriert. Insgesamt gutes Exemplar. - PROVENIENZ: Aufgrund der Deckelvignette mit IHS-Monogramm möglicherweise ursprünglich aus jesuitischem Besitz. - Innendeckel mit hs. Besitzeinträgen des 19. Jhs.

The first Continental edition, the third appearance of the Principia in print, the text being that of the second edition of 1713. With engr. title vignette, double-page engr. plate and numerous schematic illustrations. Contemp. blindtooled calf with jesuit centrepiece "IHS" and gauffered gilt edges. - Some slight browning, here and there waterstains at bottom, title somewhat stained, front flying endpaper removed, spine and edges restored. Pastedown with 19th cent. inscriptions. Altogether good copy.(R)
