Eindrucksvolle farbige Mezzotinto-Tafeln von Arnauld Eloi Gautier d'Agoty, gestochen in der berühmten Technik seines Vaters Jacques Fabian Gauter d'Agoty.
"These fifteen plates follow a scheme of progress, from the classical figures at the start, to skeletal hands and feet; or we can see it as a strip performance, from fully clad nudes by stages to muscle and bone. The delightful Apollo and Venus starting the theme were of course prepared in four mezzotint plates by Arnauld-Eloi, but painted by a Nancy artist, Jean Girardet, who died five years later .. They are certainly stunning examples from neo-classical France, reproduced with sophisticated art by the Gautier Dagoty process" (Franklin, Early Color Printing S. 49f.).
Ursprünglich waren 5 Teile geplant, doch nur der vorliegende erste Teil, der die Myologie enthält, ist erschienen. - Besonderes Exemplar im zeitgenössischen Einband und mit eingefügten kleineren Blättern, jeweils mit lateinischer Legende zu den einzelnen Tafeln von einer sauberen zeitgenössischen Hand.

EINBAND: Zeitgenössischer Halblederband. 68 : 50 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 15 gestochenen Mezzotinto-Tafeln in Farbendruck. - KOLLATION: 2 Bll., 25 S. - ZUSTAND: Ränder gering fleckig, Titel mit Stempelrasur. Rücken mit kl. Läsuren, Ecken lädiert, Deckel mit einigen Knickspuren. Sonst guterhaltenes Exemplar im zeitgenöss. Einband. - PROVENIENZ: Aus der Bibliothek des Herzogs Tommaso de Vargas Machuca oder Macciucca (1679-1775), mit seinem Exlibris auf dem vorderen Innendeckel. Macciucca stammte aus einer alten spanischen Adelsfamilie, die seit dem 16. Jahrhundert im Königreich Neapel ansässig war.

Contemp. half calf. - Margins slightly stained, title with erased stamp. Spine with small damages, corners defective, boards partly creased. Altogether well-preserved copy. Provenance: From the library of Duke Tommaso de Vargas Machuca or Macciucca (1679-1775), with his bookplate to front pastedown. Macciucca was a descendant of an old, Spanish noble family resident in the Kingdom of Naples since the 16th century, and assembled one of the finest libraries there.(R)
